Structural Mechanics Features and Structural Design Ideas of Light-Frame Buildings

  • Dec 02, 2021

There are two main mechanical characteristics of light-frame buildings, namely load sharing and repeated and compound effects.

Load sharing means that all components in the system have both division of labor and cooperation, and work together to bear the load. Even if a component fails-it is not able to bear the part of the load it should bear, it does not matter. The neighbors will take the lead and fight to share the load left by the failed component, so that the entire building system will not suffer at all. Influence.

To achieve the purpose of load sharing, it is necessary to adopt repeated and composite building structures. Repetition and composite structure is to arrange the same components one after another (ie repeating) (Figure 1a), and then use structural coverings to connect them into one (ie composite) (Figure 1b) to form a "repeat and composite component" ", its overall capacity and rigidity are much greater than the sum of the capacity and rigidity of individual components.

Therefore, the LGS structural design idea of light frame buildings is to use structural coverings to string the repetitive components together. If possible, all components from the roof to the ground should be arranged in a straight line to directly transmit the roof and floor loads. To the foundation, instead of transferring the load to the foundation like a beam-column building structure system, which bends and grinds the corners.
